Cycle Skills
Cycling is certainly not just for kids! And even if you've been riding for years, there are many things you can learn to help you enjoy cycling, particularly skills that make you safer and more efficient on a bike.
Fantastic session, Phil was very knowledgeable, it's given me a real confidence boost to go out on my own on the roads and join the local club. A real mind shift in relation to owning the road. Very useful to be given feedback as we were riding so we could experiment and action advice there and then. It was also great to be given homework to go away with. The input was much appreciated thank you. A good beginner session! (Cara Skinner) |
Our Cycle Skills instruction sessions are tailored to your specific needs, depending on what sort of cycling you want to do and how experienced you are. We cover two major areas, as well as offering general advice where we can:
1. Road safetySome adults are put off cycling because they don't feel safe on the roads, whether that's cycling in traffic or on winding country lanes. Contrary to the impression you might get from the media, cycling is not actually a particularly hazardous activity - there are more hospital admissions due to gardening, for example!
Some people are very keen cyclists and ride a lot but are unaware of some of the basic road safety principles that are taught in Bikeability. You may have done 'Cycling Proficiency' at a school, but roads and cars have changed, and the way cycling is taught today is very different. Our Cycle Skills training incorporates the fundamentals of the Bikeability programme which is the DfT's official guidance on how to cycle safely on roads. We believe that a little bit of training can keep you a lot safer - and therefore happier! - on the roads. Brilliant session - very, very informative and has inspired me with confidence to ride on the roads. Thank you Phil I found it really helpful. I learnt a lot and will definitely feel much more confident when out on the road. Found the advice re gears and riding position really helpful too. Just one hour with you will improve my riding performance and enjoyment no end! (Nancy Poulter) |
2. Cycling TechniqueSome people in this part of Cornwall are put off cycling because they don't like the hills - either going up, or down! Some are worried about slipping on muddy roads, or negotiating potholes.
These issues can be greatly helped by an awareness of some basic cycling techniques such as how to corner safely and use your gears and brakes properly. Even some quite experienced cyclists are unaware of these techniques, simply because they've never been taught them. In our Cycle Skills sessions we provide coaching in these areas and more. Riding a bike is even more enjoyable when you've learned the techniques to do it well. |

Thank you for taking the time to meet up and teach us some very important cycling skills, I’ve learnt a lot today and it was great to get back out on the bike. I will feel a lot more comfortable owning the road now and feel happy knowing it’s ok to do so as I’ve always tried to stick to the cycle lane before. (Kara Wilcox)
