Bikeability
Our instructors visit many local schools, delivering government-funded Bikeability training through School Games Organisers such as Arena (based in Callington). All primary school children can expect to have the opportunity to do levels 1 and 2, and some secondary school children will be able to take part in level 3. There is also funding available for some 'Bikeability Plus' modules.

Bikeability is 'Cycling Proficiency' for the 21st century, designed to give this generation the skills and confidence to ride a bike assertively on today’s roads. Certificates and pin badges are awarded on completion of each level.
Bikeability is taught as a sequence of skills, each building upon those already mastered. This means the duration of training depends on how quickly a trainee learns each new skill. |
Level 1 is taught in a traffic-free environment (e.g. school playground) and is usually offered in years 4, 5 or 6.
It is normally delivered in one session of 1 to 1.5 hours. Taught in groups of up to 12 trainees per instructor, it is designed to be fun and active. The opening section is about looking after your bike and checking it is safe to ride. The skills are then taught through games and exercises. By completing Level 1, you will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to make a trip and undertake activities safely in a motor traffic-free environment and as a pre-requisite to a road trip. |
Level 2 is taught on quiet roads but with real traffic conditions and is usually offered in years 5 or 6.
Level 2 is delivered in one or two sessions of 2 to 3 hours. The sessions are all delivered on local quiet roads. There can be up to 6 trainees per instructor and 2 groups may be run together. By completing Level 2 you will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to make a trip safely to school, work or for leisure on quiet roads. |
Level 3 is taught on busy roads incorporating real traffic conditions and advanced road features and is usually offered at secondary school or to adults.
Level 3 is delivered on a maximum ratio of 1:3 for at least 2 to 3 hours, often spread over a couple of sessions. The first session will start off-road to check bike and riding abilities, and then progress onto busier roads at an appropriate pace. By completing Level 3 you will be able to make a trip safely to school, to work or for leisure on busy roads and using complex junctions and road features. |
If your child enjoys cycling, why not encourage them to get involved with a local club and explore cycling as a sport? Contact Wadebridge Coasters CC to find out more about 'Coasters Youth', their Go Ride club. |
